Back Home
Yup...the theme of our trip was to relax... and we managed to. 
It's always good to come home, but that doesn't mean that it was easy to leave Hawaii. I already miss the warmth very much, it was nice to wear summer clothes for a few days. Today it's back to life's normal routines. I'll be back soon to share some of the beautiful things I saw.

A Few Pictures To Share...
...from the last trip we made to Hawaii last June (2009). It was a strange trip, Oahu was as beautiful and special to us as ever, but our lives were in flux and so it was difficult to relax and let it go. Oahu is the island where we were married - our wedding took place at a beach house we rented for a couple of weeks on the windward side of the island in the town of Hauula. When I'm in Hawaii, a part of me feels like I am home. This time before we go to Oahu we are heading to Kauai first for a few days...I like it that we are getting the chance to explore an island that neither on of us has been to before. I'll still be working while I'm on vacation - one of the advantages/drawbacks of an online job, but really, I can't complain. I've been bulking up my hours during the first part of this week so that I can have a bit more time to vacation once we're there, next week I'll do the reverse. If I get the chance to, I may check in while I'm there and might even share new pictures. Because the s-son was with us on Valentine's Day, I have been saying that we'll be really celebrating on the 19th this year. A little romance is in order for this trip - really, it's the perfect setting! Mostly though, the goal is for both of us to relax!

I've been to Oahu seven times, but it was on our last trip that I finally made it to Pearl Harbor.
Pearl Harbor is a beautiful and sobering place to visit.
The husband visited Pearl Harbor as a teenager (back in the 80's), and said that the tour guides at that time were almost exclusively veterans of WWII. It made me sad to think that most of the veterans of that war are gone now.
This mural is on the building that houses Ted's Bakery on the North Shore - best place to get Chocolate Haipua Cream Pie!!
This is a sign that is installed at the Macadamia Nut Farm on the windward side of Oahu.

Happy Valentine's Day

A Few Items
Today I am [still] fighting that darn head cold. Yesterday I decided to proceed through the day as though I was completely healthy...I got lots done, but I think I'm paying for it today. The morning was spent cleaning out the chicken coop, and prepping the garden for the new raised beds with landscaping fabric. 
It all still looks a bit rough, the raised beds need a bit more paint, then we will need to line the beds with another layer of fabric and fill them with a vegetable soil mix. This time of year tends to be a rough looking time for the garden anyways...it always looks so much better with blue skies and lots of plants growing.
After all of that, we will be bringing in gravel to fill the paths inbetween the raised beds. We are now up to a total of 14 raised beds - 4 from last year and 10 new beds this year. Of the new beds, 8 are 12 by 4 foot beds and 2 are 10 by 4 foot beds. I am going to use the two 10 foot beds to grow flowers.
I have always had a hard time cutting flowers out of my front and side yards to bring into the house. So I am going to specifically grow flowers that are meant to be cut and brought inside for the house. I picked up some bulbs and tubers at Costco specifically for this purpose - Ranuculus, Peonies, and Cala Lilies. 
I'm sure I'll add more bulbs over time - tulips and daffodils. It's been kind of grey and rainy here lately, so the primroses planted to the front bed in the last couple of weeks are a welcome bit of color in the view from the front window.
Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. It will be pretty low key here. I am thinking about making a batch of creme brulee, but other than that, there really isn't anything special planned. I think the husband and I are both on a mental count down for the trip we're taking to Hawaii, just the two of us. Oahu is where we were married, so whenever we spend time there, it is always special. But we are doing something new this time and spending the first part of our vacation on the island of Kuai. Neither on of us has been there before, so I'm excited to explore the island. I've been told it's the most beautiful and relaxing of the islands. Can't wait!
